Eggs Benedict perfectly prepared begins the day.
Cynthia and I set off on a Rick Steves self-guided walk through town and across the river into Steingasse – a narrow cobbled lane of houses preserved from medieval times, including an old whore house.

The long, deep gouge in the side of the last house on the lane is supposedly from a tank driven by a drunk GI leaving his night’s entertainment.

We walk back to the old town across the river, David misremembers Johannes saying that a church named St. Michaels was his favorite — it was not, he said “Franciscan Church” — but we don’t realize that until we get to St. Michaels. Very small, intimate space with a gorgeously wrought iron gate.

We enter the cathedral hoping to hear an organ recital, only to walk into morning service. So we sit for a bit, listening to the German sermon, and wait for the organ to kick in for the psalms.

Then, we find the funicular and ride it up to the fortress, which does have splendid views of the city, especially a nice perspective on the layout and size of the “old town.” As is almost usual in busy Salzburg, we wait to get a table with a good view, letting others sit in the sun or at tables not near a balcony. Cynthia gets fries and a coke, David has iced coffee, which he didn’t realize meant a spoon of coffee with gallons of ice cream and whipped cream floating on top. But all good.

We walk around the fort and find an interesting fire-prevention mechanism used in medieval times when all the roofs were wood, of course, so fire was a serious concern.

Our last night we eat at a highly rated schnitzel restaurant called Meissl & Schadn or Schnitzel Love. Conveniently it is just across the street from our hotel. Cynthia orders schnitzel and it is really good but plenty for 2 to share. Our experience is that servings are consistently large in Austria and restaurants are used to people sharing.

Although she gets a doggy bag for half her dinner Cynthia orders Salzburger Nockerl for dessert. It is a local speciality very much like a soufflé. Delicious. Cynthia orders the small one – plenty for 3-4 to share!

We go to bed stuffed.
