May 8, Lisbon

We use the explicit instructions left by our hosts and have a nice breakfast of tea and espresso and toast for Cynthia. But we decide to make an exploratory foray into the neighborhood to find the “large” supermercado where we might find a range of cleaning supplies and fresh vegetables to prepare for dinner after Bernadette’s and Byron’s arrivals. This means we will get lost a time or two, but we eventually find the store not far from the school of economics and management, which, itself, is not far from the Parliament building.

From our apartment, of course, almost everything is uphill. “You gotta get up to get down.” We walk on curving narrow cobbled streets with numerous small row houses both lived in and under serious renovation. The sidewalks of cobbled stone are about two feet wide so it’s “up against the wall” when the rare car surges uphill. Transmissions must be made of titanium here.

The supermercado is pretty similar to small markets in DC and we find everything we need and wend our way back to the hotel where Cynthia does a bit of laundry while David putters and figures out how to use the kii wifi/bluetooth speakers that look intimidatingly hi-tech and potentially powerful. Success almost immediately yields David’s entire iPhone music oeuvre. We are waiting for a phone call or a buzzer (though we’re not sure our apartment 4H has a button at the locked front door) or a scream from the street below when Bernadette arrives, which she finally does.

Cocktails continued on the terrace after which David made a salad, which Bernadette had a jones for, and spaghetti and meatballs for all of us. Cynthia had found some Portuguese custard cups for herself and Bernadette and we made plans for the next morning — Byron was expected to arrive at 2:30 or so — and went to bed.
