Mar 4 Nelson to Blenheim

Travel from Nelson to Blenheim visiting two Marlborough wineries (Alan Scott and Cloudy Bay) on the way and meeting Robin and Bernice Sutherland.

Cynthia is on a mission to get a new iPhone at one of three stores while John and Roberta visit the botanical garden around the cathedral where David ran (what seems a century in the past)…. The days are so filled with so many new sites, new people, new facts that are interesting and symbolic but so numerous they are impossible to remember.

A fact: The Maori, a terrifically tribal and territorial and, not infrequently, savage folk, would filter through the forest at night, hunting for food or raiding another nearby tribe, and the first warrior, the scout for the pack, would bend a frond of the Silver Fern — the plant that’s become one of the emblems of New Zealand, which, when its underside is exposed, shines silver day or night — pointing it in the direction that others should follow, and the last person in the pack would bend it back so that no one following them would know they were there or where they were headed.
