February 21, SMA

Cynthia woke feeling much better but now David was suffering. So, Debra and Cynthia left him home and went to visit some of the shops that are part of Debra’s traditional itinerary.

Before going to Debra’s lunch destination we headed for the paper mache factory which Debra had always wanted to visit. Along the way we passed lovely murals.

There are so many little streets here and one inevitably gets a little lost and discovers something charming and unexpected. Google maps led us to a dead end street but an American gentleman asked if we were lost and sent us off in the right direction. It’s easy, he says. San Miguel does not have signs hanging out over doorways nor on the sidewalks. It is only when you arrive at an open door and look in do you see that there is a shop or restaurant or hotel. This is a problem when the uneven pavement and narrow sidewalks requires you to look down all the time.

We walk right past the factory and are at another dead end. But, there is a woman opening the door of her rental house and she sends us back to the door with a pink paper stuck on the door. It’s a small place but we are able to spend at least 30 minutes debating which napkin rings and Christmas ornaments to buy.

We then headed out for an arts center that has a restaurant where Debra annually eats her favorite hamburger and onion rings. Such is SMA. La Fabrica la Aurora used to be a textile museum but is now a shopping mall of home furnishings and art galleries. Lovely things and prices to match. Every on the lookout for tablecloths to fit our extra wide table I have a purpose and find one I love. They will cut it to the round shape I prefer and have it ready the next day.

Next we go back to the center of town and find Debra’s favorite clothing store. We go to last year’s location and it is not there. Google Maps gets us closer and wandering around finds the store’s new location. Cotton comfort clothes- tops, pants, dresses. Debra buys one (or more) of each.

A very successful shopping day.
