September 29 Paris

Although some had been to the Louvre before and were not as enthused, the desire to stick together got us all off to see the famous works of art. Winged Victory, Mona Lisa

A bonus was that a branch of a well known pastry café- Angelina – which was on the bucket list of a couple ladies in the group. The hot chocolate was highly recommended and we were told that it would serve chestnut cake. It was a convenient and good lunch.

After lunch we walked through the Tuillieries Garden to l’Orangerie to see the Monet water lilies paintings. Unexpected was an exhibition of Modigliani works and information on his friendship with Paul Guillaume.

That evening we attended a concert inside Ste Chapelle featuring Pachelbel’s Canon in D and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. For efficiency we planned to tour the church at 6 and stay for the 8 pm concert. As it happened we were able to enter at 4 but forced to leave at 7 and re-enter. So, we found a café across the street for a quick drink. Aperol Spritzes or all except Nancy who stuck with her Jack and Sprite. (The first serving was all Sprite but we were able to get that corrected!!) Crossing the street was not as easy as in the past. There is fencing from corner to corner on the Ste Chapelle side of the street. Maybe for security of the Palais de Justice or maybe to just stop jaywalking at this popular site.

We were very glad that we saw the stained glass windows of Ste Chapelle in the daylight. They were spectacular! It was dark when we returned. The evening concert with a string quintet in that beautiful setting was superb.(how can you miss with Vivaldi’s Four Seasons?)

Uber home.

  1. NYC’s MOMA has a room with three joined panels — six and a half feet high by 41-plus feet wide in all — of Monet’s water lilies. Spectacular, even if you don’t worship Monet.
