September 18 Nice

David and I took off early for a very full day in Nice. We started with The Promenade des Anglais (the English promenade). On one side is the beach and the other is the main road in front of hotels and casinos. The quite wide paved walk serves running races, families with strollers, bathers and sun catchers, yoga and HIIT classes, the works. There were sections of private beach with loungers and umbrellas and restaurants. Other – public – sections had not of that but cost nothing, The beach is rocky – not sand. So, the chaise loungers with umbrellas seems most inviting. We saw people lined up at 10 am, waiting for the private sections to open.

After the promenade we walked into the old city (Vieux Nice) to see the flower market and climb castle hill. The market was a disappointment but there were other interesting sights along the way: a truffle store with a restaurant where all dishes involved truffles, a couple of Baroque churches, fun bars and restaurants.

On Castle hill we had great views of the shore and city. There is a Jewish cemetery adjacent to a Christian one – separated by a fairly short wall. There is also a memorial to all the Jews that were sent from the two Nice train stations to gas camps elsewhere. Each name and destination is listed.

And, as though there was no enough for one day we went to the Marc Chagall museum up town. I love Chagall’s work so this was a special treat. I went ahead of David and spent a couple hours in the garden working on the blog and just enjoying the calm. Museum spaces are so uplifting. Valerie and Ian missed the museum but we planned to meet back at La Belle Etoile.

Instead of another $16 Uber, David and I decided to take a train ($3.80 for both). On the walk to the train station we passed many apartment buildings that looked quite nice. When we reached the train station I had to take a shot of the Amazon lockers!

We arrived back in Villefranche later than planned. Figuring out how to get to the train station was just the beginning of the train experience. Where to buy a ticket, how to buy, etc took some time to figure out. But, we were still able to get to town with enough time to leisurely walk to the restaurant. The Calder’s had difficulty getting an Uber and made the long walk from the hotel. They were not happy. But good food and drink worked some magic.
