August 14 Seattle Bookgroup

Day 2 with the book group.  Janet arrives in the morning and we divide 3 in her car and 3 in an Uber.  Off to the Nordic museum.  It’s very new and quite interesting.  Much information about Scandinavian countries first and then information about how 1/3 of them moved to the US.  First to the east coast but most moving further west for climate and industries that matched their home countries and made use of their skills.  The loggers pushed on to the Pacific coast.  Who knew that it is illegal to pay a man more than a woman in Norway?!  After touring we had a lovely lunch in the cafe.

I found a yarn store nearby and took off to get some needles.  Sandy had already left with her niece.  The others drove to the yarn store to pick me up.  Back to the house and a hike near Janet’s before heading to Union Lake and a boat ride.

Janet’s brother, Jim, played captain on our electric boat so that we could wine and dine and look around.  We spent a fair bit of time trying to remember the look of Tom Hanks houseboat in the movie “Sleepless in Seattle”.  There were many houseboats on the lake so we were having a fun Where’s Waldo time of it.  Janet treated us to the ride and the captain and the food.  It was a lovely time on the water.

After we got home we discuss our next book and meeting date.  We selected Salt: a world history.  It’s non-fiction time and so many of the best sellers and award winners are about the depressing failures of our society.  These days none of us want more to make us sad.  Salt sounded enlightening and politically neutral.  Hopefully!
