A planless day. Shopping and blogging.
Feliz Cinco di Mayo.
We wake late, caffeinate and laze about Jane’s house for the entire morning under sunny skies, 80 degrees and perfect humidity. The caretaker comes to the house and cleans everything as the gardener tidies up the yard. The pool ripples in a gentle breeze under palm fronds that barely wave.
In the afternoon while David tries to catch up on this blog, Cynthia takes a bus into Nadi to shop shirts for Byron and pants for herself. The stores are packed with people and the housewares store has five checkout counters with rows of at least 15 people at each. She sees no saris on the street; the Indian population appears to wear western or Fijian clothing in public.
Cynthia returns home around six with shirts, pants, freshly shelled peanuts and spiced peas. After a quick cocktail, we walk to Port Denarau Marina for dinner, selecting an Italian restaurant where we sit drinking Chianti by the railing along the harbor and watch cats and crabs scuttle along the water.
Another restful day in Paradise.
From C:
As I ride the bus to Nadi I see a sign for Lautoka. I remember visits there to see Salome who was from Lautoka and taught with me on Koro. She had a son while on Koro and I attended his birth. Salome was not married but was otherwise a very proper woman. Her parents took her son to live with them in Lautoka. It was my understanding that the grandparents raise the children so that those of prime working age can do so. So, Salome had to leave Koro if she wanted to be with her son. I visited her there several times. I am so sorry that I did not do more research before this trip. Somewhere I have an old address for her and I am sure that I could get information if I knew where to begin. I am so near and am overwhelmed with the wasted opportunity.
