Kayaking in Awaroa Inlet, hiking.
David climbs the mountain behind Meadowbank Lodge at 7 am and runs much of it with a wild abandon, totally alone but for one startling encounter. Freedom and solitude give him wings and he wonders about their connection, thinks about Thoreau, considers the dynamics of small groups, like the tour he is on. At one turn, running hard, he thinks about not making the turn, flying off the bend and into the steep valley below. But something tethers him and he turns, continues the path. Turns a corner and stops dead when faced by Geraldine Chaplin, age 20, with a backpack. Reincarnated, with a bearded gent behind her.
Breakfast and kayaking: sting rays in the water, flying waka parrots, shags (cormorants), oyster catchers near the lodge.
The kayaking was smooth and lovely despite rain that came and went. About an hour on the water with about 30 minutes prep before.
After drying and lunch Cynthia decides to forgo the afternoon hike and have quiet time. Everyone is very friendly and, despite her nature, Cynthia needs some time away from the chit chat and pressure to be with the group. The lodge setting is lovely. The only interruption is a walkie talkie that has frequent loud conversations full of static. It is in the kitchen, near all the sitting areas even though no staff are anywhere around.
